USA Coast to Coast stage 24 St Joseph MO to Chillicothe MO

Certainly one of the hardest riding days of the trip so far, hot (32C), humid (90%) and many many small hills of which we are promised even more tomorrow.


After about 30 miles we had a pleasant surprise when we all stopped at a junior school in a village called Maysville and the children came out to talk to the cyclists.  We then rode 2 blocks further and were treated to cake and drinks made by the lovely ladies from the Dekalb County Historical Society.  We also had a quick visit to their museum which contained lots of memorabilia from the last 15 years of American history.


We finished the ride in Chillicothe which claims to be the home of sliced bread as the first sliced bread machine was invented here.

USA coast to coast stage 41 Troy NY to Battleboro VT

 128KM, 1,727M climbed, 5 hours 49 minutes  Total 5,373KM, 32,183M climbed, 218 hours 47 minutes  A big climbing day today and we also crossed into our 13th different state Vermont. We started climbing from the off with a 3 mile climb just outside of Troy which split the group up and due to the climbing I found myself on my own for most of the ride.   As we entered Vermont most of the rest of the ride was in the Green Mountain National Park which meant stunning scenery of trees, hills and fast flowing rivers. The next climb was an 8 mile ascent up the Prospect Mountain and then a great descent with smooth sweeping roads.  After another small climb I descended at speeds hitting 48MPH. I cycled over my first covered bridge before then unfortunately starting to ride on a road that was under repair with no tarmac.  After 1.5 miles of bone shaking riding and fearing that my bike might fall apart I decided to take a diversion off the designated route.  Whilst this diversion was scenic I did

USA Coast to Coast stage 30 Crawfordsville IN to Greenfield IN

 120KM, 380M climbed, 4 hours 55 minutes  Total 3,859JM, 22,187M climbed, 157 hours 42 minutes  A short ride today of 73 miles in the context of the daily average of 80 miles. A very different ride to normal which started with pleasant countryside and towns and then became city riding as we rode through the middle of Indianapolis.  Unfortunately although we rode through the suburb of Speedway I didn’t get to see the racetrack where the Indy 500 is held. The ride included 2 bike trails the first following the river and the second a trial of about 10 miles taking us out of Indianapolis and to our destination Greenfield which is a fairly non descript town with the usual collection of fast food restaurants.   We finish 2 weeks today in Boston. https://www.relive.cc/view/vr63wy4dzd6
